Use of AI in Assessments Policy


Introduction


This policy outlines the acceptable use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and technologies in assessments to maintain academic integrity, fairness, and compliance with assessment standards.


Scope


This policy applies to all learners, assessors, and staff involved in the preparation, submission, delivery, and marking of assessments across all qualifications/courses offered by Study Active


1. Definition of AI Tools


AI tools include, but are not limited to:

• Generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT, Bard, Claude)

• Automated writing or coding assistants

• AI-based translation tools

• AI-based research summarisers or paraphrasers


2. General Principles

• Assessments must reflect the learner’s own knowledge, skills, and understanding

• Use of AI tools must not compromise the integrity or authenticity of assessments

• Learners must not submit AI-generated work as their own


3. Permitted Use

AI tools may be used for:

• Research and general background reading

• Grammar and spelling checks (equivalent to standard editing tools)

• Planning support or time management tools


Learners must always acknowledge the use of AI tools in their coursework submission, including which tools were used and how


4. Prohibited Use


AI tools must not be used for:

• Generating entire responses or sections of assessments

• Completing practical tasks or demonstrating skills intended to be personally performed

• Bypassing independent thinking or critical analysis

• Assisting during open book, timed, or supervised assessments


5. Assessor and Staff Responsibilities

• Ensure assessment conditions clearly state whether AI use is permitted

• Check for signs of inappropriate AI-generated content

• Use appropriate tools and judgment to validate the authenticity of submissions

• Educate learners on ethical AI use and academic integrity


6. Outcomes of Misuse

Misuse of AI in assessments may be considered malpractice which can result in:

• Rejection of the assessment submission/coursework

• Reassessment

• Disciplinary procedures, including potential removal from the course
